These were the last drawings I did in 2011, I was away for 2 weeks before the new year so I didn't get to draw after this. The next block of iAnimate has started up so I'll be concentrating on 3d stuff again (with maybe a little 2d mixed in). I'd like to keep drawing but it depends on how busy I'll be. It was fun while it lasted, haha!

Some ideas for a personal test. The idea is in the same spirit as Boris' ghost character. I think I'm pretty happy with the one on the left, so the final might be a slight variation of her. I also like the firey one, but she no longer applies to the idea.

Okay bigger than usual post! I had the turnaround done earlier already but I wanted to wait to post it all together.This was fun! I could tell that I started to draw him differently already by the end of it all. But apparently it's normal for that to happen when developing a character..I guess if I had drawn him a lot more before doing the turnaround it all would have been a bit more consistent, but oh well!For some of the poses I used images from google as ref, but tried to change it a bit anyway. I also used Rhino House for in motion dog ref. It's a really neat site, lots of great videos.

So Chase was definitely designed as a German Shepherd, but I thought it would be fun to see what he would look like disguised as different breeds. I think they all work :D

I started a blog to give some tips and help for the entry portfolio for people looking to get into Sheridan's Animation Program. I've only started it not too long ago and it's gone on hold as of right now while I'm busy and try to find some time to work on it (I'll have it posted and linked once it's gotten more on it).
There's a part of the blog where I redraw my portfolio pieces that got me into Sheridan and last night I was inspired to redraw my character that I used for the turn around and expressions.

It felt good just to draw something for fun, no stress!
Anyway, his name is Arrow and he's a bush baby (or something). I didn't look at any animal ref this time around (and I probably didn't for the first time around either, hah!) so excuse him if he doesn't really look like one. Just trying to show a simple structured character while keeping it appealing.

This horrendous thing under here is my original from 2006 that I applied with. What is going on with those circles!? lol! I guess my understanding of structure wasn't quite there yet.

Anyway just thought I'd share this. Have a Happy Halloween!

I had meant to post this while ago, some of you have probably already seen it since Boris posted it on his blog already, but it's Boris' and my scenes from Titeuf: Le Film, compiled together. I think we worked on this the summer of 2010. I don't even remember it feels like so long ago already :S This was the first feature we got to animate on, lots of fun, lots of stress though since we had 2 jobs at the time! Never again, plz.

Sorry for the lousy update, really want to draw some stuff soon and post it! :p

Chase & Shadow

Some poses and expressions for the Egyptian cat, which I've called Shadow.
Although I liked the Anubis-like dog I drew before, I felt that it's much too similar to the cat, so I wanted something a little different for the dog, so while doodling I drew up this German Shepherd, and I think I like him! He is named Chase :) I'll hopefully get around to doing a model sheet for him too.

Ehhh, just some doodles from the past little while.
I was trying out the Stumpy Pencil brush some weeks ago (the non-coloured doodles), really like it! Just need more time to draw for myself though. The orange haired girl was drawn with photo reference, but I changed it quite a bit anyway.

Been training my dogs for the past several weeks and it's super time consuming to try and rid them of their bad habits. Going out on long walks 3 times a day takes a lot outta ya, though it's very nice and extremely refreshing to be outdoors during the summer. I am so dreading winter.

It's about time for an update! Boris and I have been taking classes at iAnimate since May and it's been going well so far. Will update with some animation later though, I'm sure nobody wants to see any bouncing balls.

Here's a few designs for a secret project Boris and I put ourselves in. It'll involve some model sheets of these guys (some or all, not sure) so if they turn out alright I'll probably post those up too sometime. It was fun to just draw whatever came to mind, since the designs were open to whatever we wanted to do.

At the moment the dialogue with the dragon design has been shelved (another thing shelved!? guh!), only because it didn't start off good, but I'll possibly do other dialogue with another character. Btw I named him Sam because Samwise's voice is who I picked in my head to voice him, and it just fits so well, lol!

Gifs are fun, but I had so much trouble just getting a good export :/
A long time ago I used to use a program called Animagic for making gif files (digmon blinks and stuff, ahah), it was excellent, but it's not really anywhere online anymore.
Photoshop can't get an accurate frame rate, and even then I was still having trouble with it for some reason.
I ended up having to do it in Flash, but I couldn't really change the quality much. Oh well.

I'm glad I did this walk though, I've noticed a lot of mistakes and there was a lot of trial and error with the tail, but I think it'll help the next time around I do one. Would love to do a run of this guy, but I gotta start on a dialogue test.

Changed the design a bit. These are just rough and loose expressions, I'm working on a walk cycle and I can see already that he's changed in places again, but only slightly from these.

Couldn't find a good dialogue clip where I was hoping to find it, so I'll have to keep looking for something to fit this guy. If anybody wants to suggest a clip or an actor it might help! :D

(btw I changed him cause I felt he looked like Raichu too much before...hehe, but I'm much happier with him now)

So it's been a while since I've updated, shame on me, I know! D:

I never made a post about ctn, but the whole trip was a lot of fun! Meeting a lot of new people and listening to some amazing talent was so inspiring! Got to visit some really cool studios which was awesome too! All the artists I spoke to were so nice and it was great to meet everyone and just listen to stories! <3

So I had been trying to develop a character for a certain dialogue clip for a while after the new year, and it took a while to get somewhere that I was pretty happy with, though she's somewhat inspired by Madame Mim. But as it's happened in the past, I'm shelving the clip and character for later. It was a little long and I was planning on treating it like a part of a film, so I won't have much time to work on it right now. The older ones are at the top and they lead to the most recent at the right bottom corner.

Trying to find a simpler character to work with for some pencil tests, I drew this up quickly and really liked it, so I have an actor in mind for the dialogue, so I'll have to go through the film to see if there's something I could do with him (Edmund from Chronicles of Narnia)

And these are already a little old..had them on my desktop though so I figured I'd post them. They're just some development for another short-film-like project that I'll look into later if it's still interesting to me.

Really excited, it's going to be awesome! :D

I did a really short dialogue test before leaving for LA since I currently don't have any dialogue in my reel. Tried it out on paper, but got really frustrated, I think because I didn't know how I wanted to compose the animation, so I tried it out in flipbook and just went with it.

Keys and breakdowns are pretty easy in flipbook, though inbetweening gets a little hard :/
But I like how quickly I was able to do the animation, so I'm definitely going to do some more tests in flipbook.

He's off-model in places, and I'm not sure how I feel about it, but it was fun, so I'm posting it.

Thanks for all the comments on my film! I'm glad it got a good response but I'm definitely ready to move on and do something different.

While waiting around for work to get figured out, I had planned on doing a Shere Khan animation, just a very short lip sync to get back into dialogue, but Shere Khan is really hard to draw D: Really. Hard. I watched Jungle Book, looked at all the model sheets I had, and screencaps, and maybe it was the stress of waiting around hoping that the job situation will work out, but I just couldn't get his likeness when trying to draw him on my own, and I didn't want the animation to be made up of only the drawings from the model sheet :S

Anyway, so I had planned on making my own model sheets for him, but I only got around to doing one, which might be way off anyway. Hah. But then I put that idea aside and decided to do something of my own creation first to get warmed up, so I picked a piece of dialogue and drew up this dog. And I have been dying to animate some animals since my film didn't have any (fish doesn't count).

I started planning out the shot but then work was starting, so for now it's put aside as well.
So here are some drawings.

I do hope to get back to them when I have a moment 8)

So here is my film, Undina:

I don't have -too- much to say about it except that is was a pretty good experience. It took me a long time to figure out the story and which direction to go in, and looking back at it, it seems so simple. Well! That's exactly what it wasn't; I needed to really simplify it, and eventually I did, but I think in the future if I make another short (and I hope to) it'll be much simpler. I wanted to focus on animating since I didn't have much in my demo reel animation-wise, so I'm glad I kept it at the rough stage.
The story was a big challenge for me, but I did it and I learned a lot. So were the minimal bgs I have, Boris helped me with the establishing shot which I ended up cutting in closer to for other shots.
Unfortunately I felt that my Sprite character ended up changing a lot from my original design, which I liked a lot more, and I found her difficult to draw for the most part, so I didn't enjoy animating her as much as I thought I would. She was the reason I chose to go forward with the story idea, but she ended up being the thing I left to the end because I wasn't excited to draw her. But in the end I think some of her shots turned out alright, so overall I think I'm satisfied with the work I did.

The pencil colouring turned out to be a lot more work than I was able to do for the deadlines, so I decided against it, although in some scenes Becky has rosey cheeks.

Also, there is pretty much no effects in my film. Again because of the time issue, but I also didn't really know where to start with effects and it's not something I wanted to worry about, especially since it still works with out them.

So I just wanted to thank Boris for helping me out when he could, it wouldn't have been done if he didn't help. Thank you to Dan Rodrigues who was amazing to work with, I think he did a great job with the music and such a short amount of time!
And I wanted to thank all the people who helped me at some point, friends who gave me suggestions here and there and people who were gracious enough to ask if I needed any help even though I didn't ask! It really means a lot, thank you! <3

The industry deadline for the films is so close now (Monday!), yet I'm still hacking away at animation! Go go go!

Well here are some screenshots of the final look I ended up going with (I didn't have enough time to col-erase colour my frames, so only Beck has rosey cheeks in some scenes).

Oh and I thought this was pretty hilarious, since I was animating her without hair... I'll probably think it's stupid when I'm all good and rested.

This is what I'm shooting for my film's animation to look like, for that kind of sketchy feel since cleaning up my whole film really isn't an option and I've gotten excited for this look already so never mind cleanup.

And my main bg for the film, most of my other shots are cutting in closer to this one, which is great cause I'm not a fan of drawing layouts :p Yet I'll need to figure out how to make them match with my animation, so they'll have some kind of sketchy feel to them as well.

The pond sprite it pretty much locked to this design (slight variations here and there), not to these colours yet though.
And just a pass for the little girl. I still have to play around with it and get comfortable drawing her. Well both, really. The pond sprite has been the same since the summer (and I had sneakily put her in my banner!), though the little girl showed up in the story once school started.

These are from the last zoo trip from this summer! (a week and a half ago)

I really loved sitting and watching the flamingos, there were so many of them and they were all doing slightly different things so there was a good variety to draw from. They got pretty aggressive towards each other too which was neat to observe.
And those red river hogs are just awesome! :D

I hope I can get to the zoo at least one more time before the film really takes over my schedule (it's already happening!) But if not, I'm pretty happy with the drawings I got 8)

I guess my next post will most likely be film related since that's all I'll be doing! Though I don't think I'll be posting everything I draw for it.

summer zoo trip #1

A few of us went to the zoo yesterday and it was the first time I went since almost last year so I was majorly rusty.
And I didn't get too many drawings, but the ones I did get, I think I like.
I plan to go again a (few times!) before school starts up again. That only gives me..less than a month!

And we went to Stingray Bay and pet the stingray(s) which was actually really cool! There were some bottom-dwelling sharks in there too but they were pretty shy.

These are just 2 concept boards I drew up for my film that I liked, but won't be using them.

I've seen a few people do one of these and they've been really pretty so I wanted to try it out and thought it'd be good practice for digital painting. Only actually somewhat pleased with the face though, I just wanted to get it done with by the time I was at the body :p

So just to keep me posting, here are some really fast drawings I had done at the end of the school year for my story pitch. Will not be using this though as my idea. It was just something I cranked out while finishing the group film.

But in any case I thought some of these were kinda cute. I don't think I'll post anything about my film idea just yet, I wanna work it out before showing it to people, though do have a character that I'm happy with.

These are by no means examples of great animation, though I think I (and everyone in my group)did a really great job in the time that we had to do everything. Not to mention I learned a lot! You know, actually doing animation with a story behind it.

So being in the hot sun for a week was sweet B) It was so hard to get anything done there though, so absolutely nothing was accomplished. Except getting a really badly uneven tan. Oi.

Kat asked me to draw her character in my style, so I did. But I did two. I don't know what my style is yet. Though I'm pretty sure it's severely leaning towards the one on the right, though I somewhat miss how my drawings used to turn out.

Okay, so the fortune teller woman now has a name; Colette Molier (Mol-ee-ay), "Madame Molier" or sometimes called Madame Mole.

And so she was used for my weight lift and toss assignment, which was fun to do, but oh so very time-consuming x) It's not fully done though, and I would definitely like to animate her again sometime.

I needed to re-upload this onto youtube cause I was watching it over and noticed I held the wrong frame when she's lifting the ball. Oi, and I handed it in like that too O_o;

The various animals came to our school from the zoo. I only really got around to drawing the camel.

And an opencanvas sketch that turned painterly, which I have been trying to finish for a while now, but doesn't seem like that'll happen soon, so I'll just post it-as-is. You don't even know how many arms and hands I went through. And they still turned out cruddy. Maybe some day I'll finish it..

Completely randomly, we got commissioned to draw this dudes kid, Noah. How crazy, yet really cool :D
